After the massive massacre of the British forces at Isandhlwana by the Zulu impis on January 22 1879,
it was believed that Younghusband's "C" Company of the 1st Battalion of the 24th Foot was the last to hold out against the Zulus at the foot of the mountain; one man fought till nearly nightfall of that day from a cave among the rocks (but ultimately died) .
